Turning "Scared" into Inspired: Lessons from the Small Business Expo in NYC

Turning "Scared" into Inspired: Lessons from the Small Business Expo in NYC

"Do something that scares you every day." — Eleanor Roosevelt

As a small business owner, taking steps outside your comfort zone isn't just an occasional event—it's practically part of the daily job description. When you’re running a young handmade business, deciding where to invest your time, energy, and resources can feel overwhelming. Doubt has a funny way of creeping in right before you step into a new environment.

Recently, I found myself facing one of those exact moments of hesitation when deciding whether to register for the Small Business Expo in New York City. Ultimately, I decided to push past the hesitation, team up with my creative partner and friend Rachel, and just go for it.

Looking back, I am so glad I did. Here is what making that leap taught me about community, learning, and the unexpected power of getting a little lost along the way.

Finding Comfort in the Shared Journey

Entrepreneurship is a wild roller coaster full of steep highs and quiet lows. When you spend most of your days heads-down in your own creative workspace, it’s easy to feel like you’re navigating the peaks and valleys all on your own.

Stepping into the expo was like a breath of fresh air. Being surrounded by hundreds of other business owners walking the exact same path was a deeply refreshing, almost spiritual experience. We had incredible conversations with fellow makers and entrepreneurs, met fascinating people from all walks of life, and were reminded that no matter what stage your business is in, the struggle and the passion are universally shared.

The Value of Showing Up to Learn

Beyond the networking, the core of the event was packed with educational opportunities. We soaked up insights from a wide range of breakout sessions and sat in on three keynote presentations.

When you run a handmade business, it’s easy to spend all your time in the business—crafting products, organizing inventory, managing logistics. Taking a full day to step back and work on the business by learning from expert speakers and industry peers provided a fresh perspective that was well worth every bit of effort it took to get there.

The Adventure of the Journey (and Missed Exits)

Of course, no day trip into Manhattan comes without a little chaos.

Our trip kicked off with a 5:00 AM drive up to NYC. Somewhere along the line, we took an accidental detour through the Lincoln Tunnel straight back into New Jersey! We had a good laugh, rerouted, and arrived at the Javits Center a little bit late—but we made it, and we completely conquered the day.

Sometimes, pushing through the minor setbacks and roll-with-the-punches moments is where the real memories are made.

Fueling the Mind and Creative Spirit

No trip to New York City is complete without soaking in the city’s endless creative energy and, of course, incredible food.

We kept our momentum going with a fantastic day of dining and exploring:

  • Lunch: Delicious sushi and ramen at Suramu on 10th Avenue.
  • Midday Pick-Me-Up: Essential coffee run to Bluestone Lane.
  • Dinner & Bites: Winding down at Eataly in Hudson Yards.

Beyond the event floor, simply walking through the streets of NYC was pure inspiration. Everywhere you look—from architecture and store displays to public murals and street style—art is everywhere.

Pushing Past the Hesitation

It’s easy to stay in the safe zone where everything is comfortable and predictable. But true growth—both personal and professional—happens the moment you decide to do the thing that intimidates you.

Taking a chance on attending the Small Business Expo turned out to be exactly the boost of energy, connection, and inspiration my business needed.

Now, I’ll leave you with the same question I’ve been asking myself lately: What is something that scares you right now—and what's stopping you from going for it anyway?
