From DIY Photoshoots to Brooklyn Studios: A Solopreneur’s Guide to Letting Go

The multi-hyphenate reality of starting a business hits you all at once. One day you’re focused on honing your craft, and the next, you’re trying to decipher SEO algorithms, balance the books, draft email campaigns, and single-handedly run a photography studio.

When you start out, wearing every single hat isn't just common—it feels mandatory. You learn on the fly. You pivot. You stretch every dollar. But eventually, every entrepreneur hits a wall where doing it all yourself stops being a badge of honor and starts holding your business back.

Wearing All the Hats

For the past year, I’ve been my own full-time product photographer. I went all in: set up a selfie light, dusted off a digital camera, gathered textured backdrops, and meticulously staged every single piece with props. I spent hours tweaking the setup, trying to catch the light just right, hoping to capture the exact detail, texture, and feel of my handmade products.

And while those DIY shots got me through my first year, I had to be honest with myself: they just weren't doing the crafts justice.

As an artisan, you put so much intention, time, and heart into what you make. When your product photos don't reflect that level of quality, you’re doing your hard work a disservice. Recognizing that gap is hard, but deciding to do something about it is freeing.

Taking My Crafts to the Next Level

There comes a pivotal moment in business where growth requires letting go. You have to step back, recognize where your time is best spent, and leave certain tasks to the experts.

So, I took a big step. I carefully packed up 2 boxes of my product samples and shipped them off to Squareshot, a professional product photography service in Brooklyn. Handing off that piece of the business felt like a giant breath of fresh air. Instead of spending hours struggling with lighting and editing, I can focus on creating, connecting with customers, and building the business.

I’m eagerly waiting to see the final images. I can’t wait to update the website, refresh my social feeds, and feature crisp, high-quality visuals in upcoming email newsletters.

If you’re currently trying to be the marketer, accountant, photographer, and maker all at once—take a breath. You don't have to master every field to build a successful brand. Finding trusted partners to handle the rest isn't giving up control; it's giving your business the space it needs to truly grow.
